Casing Running Operation Using Vulcan PROBE™ Reamer Shoe & Phazer™: SR Eco Centralizers.

A National Oil Company (NOC) in Southeast Asia is currently drilling a technically challenging onshore development well using 750 HP land rigs with limited operational capability.


These constraints required the operator to adopt a more efficient and controlled casing deployment strategy. To achieve this, the NOC utilised a Casing Running Tool (CRT), enabling circulation, rotation, and the ability to push the casing, key functions for a successful reaming-while-running operation in difficult wellbore conditions.



For this interval, the Client selected Vulcan’s PROBE™ Reamer Shoe and Phazer™: SR Eco Centralizers, chosen for their proven performance in navigating tight, irregular, and unstable hole sections while maintaining casing integrity and standoff.

EQUIPMENT OVERVIEW


PROBE™ Reamer Shoe

The PROBE™ Reamer Shoe is engineered to guide casing strings through restrictive or irregular wellbores where conventional equipment may struggle. Its robust nose geometry, reinforced cutting structure, and optimised flow paths help:


• Ream through ledges, doglegs, and minor obstructions.

• Stabilise the casing during rotation.

• Facilitate the casing reaching TD with minimal working of the string.

• Reduce the risk of casing damage or premature wear.


This makes the PROBE™ particularly effective in wells with known instability, debris accumulation, or variable formation hardness.

PHAZER™: SR-ECO

The Phazer™: SR Eco Centralizer is designed to deliver high standoff efficiency while minimising torque and drag critical in deviated and high-angle sections.


It's engineered profile and low-friction characteristics help:


• Maintain centralisation for improved cement placement.

• Reduce running friction during rotation and reciprocation.

• Support casing integrity in tight or tortuous wellbores.

• Provide a cost-effective, lightweight solution without compromising mechanical performance.


Together, the PROBE™ and Phazer™: SR Eco form a complementary system for reliable casing deployment in demanding environments.

WELL PARAMETERS


OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

INITIAL RUN

During the first casing run, the 7" string encountered a significant restriction at approximately 4,400 ft MD.


The crew attempted to work through the obstruction using:

• Rotation up to 25 rpm.

• Reciprocation.

• Application of weight-on-bit during reaming.


Despite these efforts, progress remained limited. The restriction was attributed to a combination of challenging wellbore geometry and debris accumulation, which prevented the casing from advancing safely.


Given the persistent hold-up, the decision was made to POOH the casing and run a dedicated cleanout BHA with bit to restore wellbore condition.

Probe™ Reamer Shoe Condition

• Before RIH: As-manufactured condition.

• After POOH: Minor cosmetic wear only, no structural damage.


Phazer™: SR Eco Condition


• Surface inspection after POOH showed only paint loss, with all mechanical features intact.

CASING RE-RUN

Following inspection, both the PROBE™ Reamer Shoe and Phazer™: SR Eco Centralizers were confirmed to be in excellent mechanical condition, requiring no replacement. Their durability after the initial challenging run demonstrated the robustness of Vulcan’s equipment.


On the re-run, the 7" 26.0 ppf casing was successfully deployed to TD. Key operational practices included:


• Controlled rotation throughout the interval.

• Continuous circulation to manage debris and stabilise the wellbore.

• Steady reaming through tight spots and high-angle sections.


The equipment performed as intended, enabling the casing to pass through previously problematic zones without further operational delays.

CONCLUSION


The Client expressed full satisfaction with the performance of Vulcan’s casing accessories. The combination of the PROBE™ Reamer Shoe and Phazer™: SR Eco Centralizers delivered a reliable, robust, and effective solution for navigating complex wellbore conditions using limited-capacity land rigs.
